Two students from the College of Design of the University of Applied Sciences Schwäbisch Gmünd, Andrea Feuerabend and Friedemann Schreiber, submitted an operating room system for neurosurgery.

In their diploma dissertation they observed the operating procedure of typical neurosurgical interventions and detected that they require extreme precision, sensitivity, and a high degree of concentration by the surgeon. The dependence on the operating team, many instruments and frequent changes of instruments result in costs, strain on the patient, delays and waiting situations, thus distracting the surgeon from the operating field. Feuerabend and Schreiber want to improve these conditions by creating a precise and less fatiguing work environment, which decreases the surgeon’s waiting times for new instruments, thus increasing his concentration and shortening the complete operation. All persons and instruments relevant to the operation are arranged in a circle around the ‘operation island’ consisting of patient and surgeon. A ring, which is positioned around the patient’s head, includes instruments such as small skin hooks, which spread apart the scalp, and brain spatulas, which fixate the brain during the operation. The surgeon can rest against the ring itself to use the instruments more easily and to protect his muscles from fatigue. Combined instruments supplement the system: They shall reduce the number of changes, thus making the operation safer and faster. The two continuous functions of rinsing and sucking for example are combined in the ‘Mosquito’ rinsing and sucking device. A two-chamber system is able to alternately keep brain cells, which are normally stored in liquid, moist and keep the operation field clean. According to Feuerabend and Schreiber, the combined instruments unite five of the most frequent processes in two instruments. The complete system will reduce the duration of an operation by up to 30 minutes. The students have developed this operating system in co-operation with neurosurgeons who expect to save 30 percent of their time in future operations by using this system.
