Statement of the organiser

Dr. Sylvia Deutschmann is managing director of the Düsseldorf-based Life Science Design Agency GmbH.

The Life Science Agency is a partner of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and as a non-profit service provider consults companies and scientists in their biotechnology, pharmacy, and medical technology projects.

Dr. Sylvia Deutschmann

Life science design has a bright future. Computer tomography and telemedicine bring images from the innermost parts of the body onto the screen; cells which rebuild joint cartilage in the human body grow on miniature frames; and titanium head implants grow together with the other bones: All this is only possible thanks to researchers and practitioners with a vision to develop new products that make human life better.

Together with our project partners we want to show that the methods of these scientists and entrepreneurs – such as the integration of new materials or the miniaturisation – enable new developments between ‘naturalness’ and ‘artificiality’. Life science design has an enormous potential for the future - not only for scientists and physicians, but also for designers and companies. Life science design is a growth market with great economic potentials.

The purpose of the life science award is to support this development and to make the advances of the industry visible. The first international conference for life sciences and design, the ‘life science design conference’, which takes place on 14 June 2005 in the red dot design museum in Essen, marks the beginning of the life science award. The conference offers designers, entrepreneurs and scientists the opportunity to exchange ideas and thus gain new insights into functional and aesthetic possibilities for designing new products.

We hereby invite you and we are looking forward to your participation.
